“Tell me about a time you negotiated while protecting a longer-term relationship.”

I helped purchase supplies for a volunteer event. A vendor offered a lower unit price if we doubled the order, but our attendance estimate was uncertain and we had little storage. I compared the total spend, likely usage and the cost of handling leftovers. I asked whether we could split the order into a smaller initial shipment and a later top-up at a slightly higher unit price. The vendor agreed to a limited reservation. We spent less overall than the bulk option and avoided storing a large surplus. I learned to evaluate the whole decision, including uncertainty and working capacity, rather than treating a lower unit price as an automatic saving.
