For a volunteer event, I built a sheet to summarize registrations by promotion channel. One channel appeared to have twice the turnout of the others. Before presenting it, I checked the raw rows and found that a join matched some attendees to multiple referral records. I counted unique attendee IDs, reconciled the total to the sign-in list and documented how I assigned a channel when there were several referrals. The revised chart changed which channel looked strongest. I shared both the correction and its cause with the organizer. I learned that an attractive chart is not useful until the unit of analysis and reconciliation are clear.
