“Describe a time a simpler baseline challenged your model.”
In a course project, a complex classifier initially outperformed my baseline. I reviewed the data split and found that records from the same user appeared in both training and test sets. I rebuilt the split by user and reran both models with the same evaluation code. The complex model’s advantage largely disappeared. I reported the corrected result and kept the simpler baseline while investigating whether additional features would generalize. I also saved the preprocessing steps so the experiment could be repeated. The lesson was not that a complex model is always wrong, but that the evaluation must match the intended use before an improvement is meaningful.
